The traditions, places, and practices we document
Pakistan possesses a remarkable diversity of historic places, traditional crafts, architecture, folk traditions, languages, performing arts, oral histories, indigenous knowledge, rituals, and living cultural practices.
Much of this heritage is preserved through communities, families, artisans, craftsmen, artists, and tradition bearers. CHRDI-Pakistan seeks to bring this valuable knowledge into systematic documentation and wider public understanding.
Heritage lives in both the things we can touch and the knowledge we carry.
Our work covers the many forms of Pakistan’s cultural heritage. Hover over a theme to learn more.
Pottery, textiles, woodwork, and metalwork, together with the master artisans who make them.
Forts, shrines, mosques, havelis, and vernacular buildings across the country.
Places shaped by the long relationship between people and their environment.
Stories, memories, and knowledge passed on by word of mouth.
Local customs, beliefs, and knowledge systems held by communities.
The methods, tools, and know-how behind living crafts.
The spoken languages and dialects that carry cultural identity.
Music, dance, theatre, and festivals that keep traditions alive.
Every heritage story is documented, every traditional skill is valued, every community is recognized as a custodian of knowledge, and cultural heritage is preserved for future generations.
Cultural heritage is not only historical material. It is a living and evolving part of community life.
Communities are the primary custodians of their living heritage. Their participation and knowledge guide our work.
Digital archives, databases, maps, and online exhibitions help preserve and share cultural information.
Learning resources and training help new generations understand and value their heritage.
